I was a big fan of the face-lifted 33 back in the day. In the end it was just an Alfasud in fancy clothes, but damn were those clothes sexy! I still have the brochure.

Yesterday we talked about never seeing the 80s Accord Aerodeck on the road anymore. How about the Alfa Romeo 33? I used to see tons of them. Now I can go for months without seeing even a single one. Even the Alfa 155 seems to have vanished.

that boxer was a pretty solid motor right? Did the rest of it just fall apart?

I have no idea. I do know that many were hooned to death. Young owners who rode them hard and would rather spend their money on 'upgrades' than on oil changes.

I blame the cash for clunkers scheme we had for their decline here in the UK.
There's very few cars from the late 80s/early 90s of any sort any more.

I never knew they made an AWD version of these.
I wonder how the flat-4 takes to forced induction. Pretty certain I could spook some Scoobies.

What Duurtlang said! Also, the 'Sud had foam in structural parts of the unibody to..., erm well, soak up water, and... I don't really know why they did this! I think that they ended this folly with the introduction of the 33, yet it was still quite prone to rust. And the owners Duurtlang mentioned usually just spot welded another sheet of metal over that rust to pass inspection, and then another sheet, and then... until there was nothing left to weld anything to.
That boxer engine lived on in the 145/6. My dad had a 1.4 90hp 145. It was fun to drive. At low revs, the gas pedal was just a noise pedal. The car wouldn't actually go any faster, just that gorgeous boxer noise got cranked uo to 11! Very handy when being bored and sitting in stop and go traffic, especially in urban areas with high walls to have that sound resonate from with the windows open. When revved, it would actually move the car a bit.

The 33 is long gone. But the 155 is a good example too. They felt like they were everywhere, in various states of nearing their DTM counterparts. And again, it feels like you just blinked once, and now they are gone.

Clean, elegant, Italian compact with a hatch and a flat-4. Sweet!
And so is the wagon.

my dad owned a 33 for a while. He said that when it worked it was an amazing driving experience. But it broke down SO often! one time in a light shower in Hungary, the car's electronics started playing up. Turned out, the rain was affecting the electricals, making the lights flicker, and the radio turning on & off
it looks good, but I wouldn't buy one

Is it possible that I saw one of these today? It looked a bit shabby but caught my attention when something loud passed a gas station I was filling up at.

I am with zee Germans ... I'm not even sure it was this particular specimen, but it should have been a 33 ... and it was a bit too loud for your average "old car".
I'll just assume that Permanent 4 is Alfaspeak for AWD ... or is it not? /wonders
